A "Harvest" of Ideas on How to be Green
It's easy being green! and here are lots of easy ways to conserve energy - and money - in your home as temperatures and home evergy costs rise this spring and summer.
Heating & Cooling
Upgrade to a higher-efficiency comfort system, such as the Bryant Evolution described in this newsletter.
- Improve your boiler or furnace's efficiency with the latest microprocessor-based controls, which automatically adjust boiler output as your energy requirements change.
- Choose a high-efficiency water heater. An indirect water heater produces an almost endless supply of hot water with a very fast recovery time. Let us help you choose the model that's right for your family's hot water needs... and your budget.
- Purchase a programmable thermostat, which automatically coordinates indoor temperatures with your daily and weekend patterns, reducing cooling bills by up to 10%. (we're giving them away in our contest!) For a room air conditioner, install a setback timer if it doesn't already have one, so it does not run when when you are not home.
- Maintain your air conditioning equipment with a professional tune-up to save you the cost and inconvenience of a breakdown during the hottest days. Clean or replace filters monthly.* Consider increasing the temperature by just three degrees to decrease your energy bills - or use a fan to circulate air so that you can increase the temperature comfortably.
- Switch from Freon® to environmentally friendly Puron® as your air conditioning coolant.
* CAUTION! Be cautious when purchasing "high-efficiency" air filters over the counter. Please check with us for proper filter sizing. Improper matching of filters and system can actually result in higher energy costs and possible system failure.
Washing
If you're in the market for a new washing machine, consider a front loading washer. It can easily save over $100 per year in energy costs, and uses half as much water. Because it uses less water, it also requires up to 68% less electricity to heat the water, resulting in more energy savings.
- Do energy-intensive tasks, such as laundry and dishwashing, during off-peak hours - nights, mornings, and weekends - when the strain on the power grid from business, industry, and homes operating air conditioning simultaneously is reduced. Operate washers and dryers with full loads to get the most for your energy dollars.
- Save water and energy simultaneously by purchasing an ENERGY STAR-certified washer, dishwasher with soil sensors to shorten the washing cycle, and clothes dryer with moisture sensors.
Around The House
- Plug energy "leaks" with insulation, weather stripping, caulking and spectrally selective windows, glass doors and skylights. Make sure your attic and the rest of your house are well insulated.
- Turn off everything not in use: lights, TV's, DVD players, computers.
When shopping for major appliances, lighting, home office equipment, windows, and electronics, look for the ENERGY STAR label. ENERGY STAR certified appliances will cut your energy bills by up to 30%. Find retailers near you at www.energystar.gov.
- When repainting, consider using ceramic additive to the paint to increase the insulation properties of your walls and ceilings.. A helpful Web site is www.hytechsales.com
- Consider an Attic Tent (tm), the new energy-saving attic insulator that protects folding attic stairs, knee wall doors and attic scuttle holes. For more information, go to www.attictent.com
Refrigerator
- Your refrigerator runs 24 hours a day and accounts for about 10% of the total home electricity bill, so keep the coils clean to reduce our energy bills and extend the life of your appliance.
Lighting
- Replacing four 75-watt incandescent bulbs with 23-watt fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) that use about two-thirds less energy and last up to 10 times longer saves $190 over the life of the bulbs. If all our nation's household made that switch, we'd save as much energy as is consumed by some 38 million cars in one year!
- You can also improve your home's security and still avoid wasting money and energy when you are out by putting timers on a few lights or installing motion detectors on exterior floodlights.
